KEF Unveils ‘Fully Wireless’ Compact Speaker System

KEF today announced a “fully wireless” follow-up to its award-winning LS50 compact wireless speaker system that uses a wireless connection between speakers instead of the usual clunky cable.

The new app-controlled LSX system ($1,100 for two speakers) shares much of the acoustic engineering used in the LS50, winner of EISA’s 2017-2018 Best Wireless Loudspeaker Award, and features a newly refined version of KEF’s signature Uni-Q driver array, which combines a 4-inch woofer with a concentric tweeter to “improve stereo imaging across a much wider listening area.”

The speaker also incorporates KEF’s Music Integrity Engine, described as a collection of digital signal processing algorithms that “ensure accurate time alignment and phase coherence.”

In addition to wireless streaming via Bluetooth/aptX and Wi-Fi, the LSX supports hi-res files up to 24 bit/192 kHz and will be updated to support AirPlay 2 wireless streaming for Apple devices in early 2019. The system is DLNA-compliant and delivers 200 watts of power via four amplifiers (2 x 30 plus 2 x 70 watts) — one for each tweeter and woofer.

System setup is accomplished using the KEF Control app — available for iOS and Android — which also manages system updates via wireless downloads and provides adjustable EQ settings. Connection options include an optical digital input, minijack auxiliary input, and a subwoofer output.

The LSX’s gently curved cabinet, designed using Finite Element Analysis, is extensively braced and employs the same constrained-layer damping techniques used in KEF’s high-end speakers. The speaker is offered with a gloss white finish or clad in black, blue, maroon, or olive colored fabric from Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat.

Excellent move by Kef, i am eager to buy with the slight hesitation i have for a kefls50w quality but with a mid-range driver, hopefully that hovers around the 3k price range. Apples and Oranges compared to this latest offering but it gives good evidence that Kef is humoring the ls50 type range.
