James Cameron's "Avatar" looks like it will make a great HDTV demo

The trailer for the $200 million epic, Avatar, hit the internet this morning, bringing with it the kind of visual effects we have come to expect from movie master, James Cameron. It gives us a sneak peak into the outlandish creature-like characters and ample amounts of explosions. But, what it can't show us, is just what kind 3D experience we can expect.

The film's live-action shots were captured using the 3D FUSION camera, which Cameron had a crucial role in developing. While you'll still have to wear polarizing glasses to get the full effect, expectations are as high as the film's budget.

Ultimately, this is a crucial time for 3D. For every serious use of the technology for story-telling purposes, there's another gimmicky horror movie throwing stuff at the audience for a cheap thrill. But, we have faith that James Cameron will get it right, even if the actual content of the trailer looks a little cheesy. We're counting on you, James. Don't let us down.

And for good measure, here is a quick video explaining how the revolutionary new 3D cam actually works.
