Dumb and Dumber—New Line Pictures (Blu-ray)

Video: 3/5
Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5

Lloyd and Harry. One's dumb, the other's dumber. You pick which is which. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels deliver a delirious no-brainer as they hit the road to return a misplaced briefcase to its owner. The fellas don't know that case is crammed with ransom money. Maybe that's why the smash mouth lowlifes are trailing them, you think?

I have some friends who REALLY like this one but it just never did much for me. It is one of those films that is so stupid and over the top that you can’t help but laugh but eventually it wears a bit thin. Carrey and Daniels play off each other perfectly though and the film is a perfect addition for the over the top comedy genre.

New Line does a decent job with this HD release but it is a far cry from the better catalog titles out there. Depth and dimension aren’t bad but fine detail is lacking. The image has a processed look to it and compression artifacts are pretty obvious in backgrounds from time to time. I liked the rich color palette and contrast but it was hard to ignore the rather plastic look of the characters at times.

The soundtrack is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and delivers a nice presentation for the genre. Dynamics are a bit limited but I wasn’t expecting much from this type of comedy. The soundtrack selections really open up the track and there is a fair amount of spatial quality added by the surrounds. Dialogue sounds natural enough though the track does sound a bit dated overall.

Extras include some deleted scenes and alternate endings along with a retrospective on this early hit for Jim Carrey. You also get some highlight moments from the film and the trailer.

New Line has delivered a decent presentation for this comedy catalog favorite but it didn’t quite hit a homerun for me. I’ve never been a big fan of the film though. Given the video quality I would probably suggest a rental before a purchase though, unless you’re just a diehard fan.
