Google working on set-top TV boxes
Google is gearing up to take on television, according to a New York Times report. The project seems to be a joint venture between Google, Intel, Sony, and Logitech. The Times says it will result in a Google TV set-top box running on Google's Android operating system and using an Intel Atom processor.
Specific details are hazy, and the companies themselves haven't actually announced anything specific. According to the Times, "spokesmen for Google, Intel and Logitech declined to comment. A Sony spokesman said he was not familiar with the project." Still, the project's existence seems to be supported by the companies hiring Android developers.
Hopefully the product will be announced by the end of the year, released by 2012, and, since Google is doing it, come out of beta in 2024.
