Fujitsu Says Goodbye to Plasma

A stalwart plasma brand is giving up on U.S. sales. Fujitsu will no longer sell plasma sets except in Japan.

The company attributed the move to "pricing and profitability," two things squeezing the flat panel TV business in general. It will continue to service plasmas sold in the U.S., and will sell them in Japan through custom retailers.

Fujitsu's sales cutback follows its earlier withdrawal from a joint manufacturing operation with Hitachi, leaving that company, Panasonic, and Pioneer as the only ones making plasmas in Japan. Other plasma manufacturers include LG and Samsung of Korea, and China's Chunghwa.
