Focal, the French speaker manufacturer, has introduced a line of high-end outdoor speakers ranging in price from $349 to $665 apiece.

The line comprises two weatherproof models, each available in standard 8-ohm versions for connection to a AV receiver or amplifier and 70-/100-volt versions for multi-speaker installations.

The Custom OD 108 ($349) and OD 108-T ($540) are two-way, sealed designs featuring an 8-inch glass-fiber woofer and 1-inch inverted dome aluminum tweeter. The Chorus OD 706-V ($429) and OD 706-VT ($665) are also two-way but pair a 6.5-inch woofer with a higher performance inverted-dome tweeter made of magnesium, said to offer an extended frequency range, and a switch for toggling between 8-ohm, 70 V, and 100 V operating modes so they can be used as traditional speakers or run in series, allowing multiple speakers to be daisy-chained together from a single power source.

Designed to be left outside in even the “harshest of environments,” the enclosures are made of paintable, UV-treated ABS plastic with a punched aluminum grille and accommodate vertical or horizontal mounting; the mounting plate has a foam rubber cushion to help prevent buzzing when the speaker is played at high volumes.

“While small, portable Bluetooth speakers have certainly made it easier to play music outdoors, they will never be able to offer the same sonic experience as having a single pair or multiple pairs of outdoor speakers placed around the backyard or outdoor installation,” said Ben Jensen, president of Focal North America. “The OD 108 and OD 706-V offer an incredible soundstage, high-performance crystal-clear audio covering a large frequency range as well as other convenient features for mounting versatility and additional customization such as a paintable outer cabinet.”
