DVD REVIEW: Art School Confidential

Movie •••½ Picture/Sound •••• Extras ••
The creative team behind Ghost World - director Terry Zwigoff and cartoonist/screenwriter Daniel Clowes - have concocted a mostly genial spoof of the art world, centering on a hapless student's efforts to make it. A movie about art should look good, and this one does, with warm colors, fine skin tones, and excellent detail even in the shadows. The soundtrack doesn't try anything fancy: Dialogue is clear, and the surround channels are used mainly to pump up the recurring Beethoven theme. The so-so extras include a couple of blah featurettes, some interesting deleted scenes, and a boring blooper reel. [R] English, Spanish, and Portuguese, Dolby Digital 5.1; French, Dolby Surround; letterboxed (1.78:1) and anamorphic widescreen; dual layer.
