DTS Puts a Soundtrack to the Art of Cardistry

DTS has brought cardistry—the magic of manipulating playing cards with sleight of hand—to life with a riveting soundtrack in “Avant Card: The Art and Sound of Cardistry.”

The short video showcases a series of mind-boggling card tricks performed by cardistry pioneers Dan and Dave Buck and world-renowned cardist Andrew Avila against a Hollywood-style soundtrack mixed in DTS Headphone:X, which creates an immersive 3D listening experience through any set of headphones.

Here’s how DTS describes the project: “Over the course of the video, the Bucks and Avila perform their vast repertoire of tricks (no CGI here!) that reflect themes such as nature, music and abstract technology. These themes are brought to life visually through imagery and graphics as well as via a dynamic, themed sound design that’s tightly synced to each trick. The intention is to create a magical, at times hyper-realistic and impressionistic relationship between motion and sound.”

“Avant Card was created to highlight just how integral audio is to every facet of our lives—even in ways we don’t realize or expect,” explained Jordan Miller, head of DTS global communications. “I collaborated with my friend Chris Chelko who introduced me to the world of Cardistry and the Buck brothers. We developed a video concept that would showcase the art of Cardistry and DTS Headphone:X technology in a dynamic way. I went to Omelet to create something that’s going to convert listeners into believers. I’m thrilled at the outcome and hope other people are as well.”
