Do TV Ratings Need a Remake?

The TV rating system, dating from 1997, is being eyed for an overhaul.

A couple of dozen American academics are urging the FCC and Congress to weigh what they say is the documented impact of violent content on children. However, several dozen other academics both here and abroad voice caution about causal links between violent content and harm to children, calling it “a false scientific premise.”

In addition, the Parents Television Council, a longtime crusader against what it deems “indecency,” complains of a paucity of G-rated material during prime time and is calling for a new rating system that would be “accurate, consistent, transparent, and accountable to the public.
