Details on the 3D BCS College Championship Football Showdown

The championship game is always exciting, but this year, it's gonna be a real thrilling event. Sony Electronics and FOX sports are joining together for the first live 3D showing of college football's crowning game.

The game will be between the University of Florida and the University of Oklahoma at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL on January 8th, 2009. Guess we won't be seeing 3D snowflakes for this one.

3ality Digital will provide the images, and it will be transmitted via Cinedigm's CineLive satellite network to a few locations. Sony will be hosting an invite-only showing at the Paris Hotel and Casino during the 2009 CES in Vegas. The Paris Hotel has a RealD-equipped theater with Sony's SXRD 4K projection technology.  Whether or not you like football, seeing the 4K and 3D display would be worth checking out. The system at the Theatre des Arts was built specifically for Sony's SXRD 4K system, complete with 3D eyeglasses.

“This event at the Paris Hotel is a perfect showcase for 4K technology,” said Alec Shapiro, senior vice president of Sony Electronics’ Broadcast and Production Systems.  “It was designed with enough flexibility to show superb-quality 2D or 3D content in the highest resolution available -- for motion picture releases, live events or other forms of alternative content, delivering benefits to everyone, from the movie-going consumer to theater owners.”

“The live broadcast to the Paris Hotel and to movie theaters across the nation is the latest example of how we can deliver our programming to audiences in new and exciting ways,” said Jerry Steinberg, senior vice president of field operations and engineering for FOX Sports. “3D technology holds unlimited potential for the future of both sports broadcasting and live event production.”

The game will also be seen at 80 theaters nationwide.  These RealD-enabled theaters will also have the BCS game, live, in 3D. Call to see if your local RealD theater will carry the game.

Theaters can be located here.

I'll be at CES, but hopefully I'll have time to check this out and report back.  Don't worry, I won't spoil the score for anyone who TiVo'd the game. —Leslie Shapiro
