Denon Targets Audiophiles with $999 Headphones

Denon is targeting audiophiles with a new $999 flagship headphone it plans to deliver in January.

Weighing less than 14 ounces, the AH-D7200 ($999) features walnut ear cups, memory foam ear cushions covered in soft synthetic leather, and 2-inch FreeEdge drivers made of a rigid, low-mass nano-fiber material designed to deliver an “accurate pistonic motion without distortion.”

The material is described as self-damping, meaning it cancels out unwanted resonances within the diaphragm, and is mounted in a compliant surround that allows it to move without flexing or distorting.

The drivers are mounted on vibration-reducing engineering resin baffles and fitted into housings made from natural wood that’s been shaped to reduce internal resonances and reflections as well as lend the headphones a “warmer, more speaker-like sound.”

The ‘motor’ assembly uses copper-coated aluminum wire to keep the voice-coil as light as possible and neodymium magnets that create a magnetic field greater than 1 Tesla to increase linearity and speed.

High-purity oxygen-free copper cable is used for the internal wiring as well as the detachable cable, which is fitted with a machine-cut metal plug. A ‘floating jack’ design is used for the connection between the cable and the ear cups to prevent the transmission of mechanical noise.

To ensure comfort, the earcups are suspended on ergonomically curved aluminum hangers and the headband is covered in sheepskin leather.
