Countdown to the Masters, Live in 4K

If you can’t make it to Augusta for the 2016 Masters Tournament, no worries. AT&T and DirecTV are putting golf fans “on the green” by broadcasting the event live in 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) starting tomorrow, Thursday, April 7.

AT&T/DirecTV will broadcast all four rounds of Tournament play at the Augusta National Golf Club from the Amen Corner feed, which covers portions of the 11th (White Dogwood), 12th (Golden Bell), and 13th (Azalea) holes. Live coverage will run from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on April 7-10.

The broadcast follows the launch of the 4K On Demand channel included in AT&T DirecTV’s Ultimate and Premier packages. Dedicated to delivering Ultra HD programming, the 24/7 channel features documentaries and content from DirecTV’s Audience Network and other sources.

If you don’t own a DirecTV 4K Ready TV from Samsung, LG, or Sony, to view the 4K broadcasts you will need a...

  • UHD TV that supports a minimum of 60 fps with an HDMI 2.0 compliant interface and HDCP 2.2 content security
  • Subscription to DirecTV’s Ultimate or Premier package (with an authorized 4K customer account)
  • 4K Genie Mini set-top box connected to DirecTV’s new Genie HD DVR (model HR54)

Disappointingly DirecTV has chosen for some reason to NOT enable showroom dealer accounts to receive 4K content! We upgraded our receiver to the new Genie and new Mini this morning only to be told that, "Sorry! Not for dealers!" We had planned to show The Masters in 4K on a Sony VPL-VW365ES front pro. :-(

Is this how DirecTV plans to attract new customers?

In a quick search looks like you need, ultimate or Preimere package 100$-150$ a month to start, Plus -Genie Advanced receiver service 20$, Plus - HD service 10-25$ depending when you signed up, Plus - 4K service 7.99$ a month for 3 channels mostly pay per-view, Plus - 0-12.99$ per Movie. Add in 10$ per box.So for around 200$ a month you have the ability to get 4K movies for 12.99$ (price most the good movies you want to see will be). Or you can go buy a 4K blueray player for 300-500$ (= 2 months directv bill) then the first week they are out on sale at (any big box retailer) for around 25$ and own them for your self.
