Blu-ray Movie Reviews

The Green Hornet comes to Blu-ray in two different packages: (1) a three-disc affair that includes the movie on Blu-ray 3D, a standard two-dimensional Blu-ray, and a DVD, and (2) just the 2D Blu-ray. I was sent the latter, but if you’re equipped for 3D, you should probably spring for the big package. That’s because, from a home theater perspective, the transfer is a winner, looking great and sounding intense.

Although the 2.40:1 picture reveals that the movie was often shot with difficult lighting and, therefore, is bathed in shadows, the color palette is expansive and vivid. Images are crisp and finely detailed, and there are no compression artifacts or other digital distortions that I could see.

Want surround-and-subwoofer action? You’ve come to the right place. Few discs I’ve heard recently cram as much into a multichannel soundtrack as this DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix does. Engines revving, tires screeching, and music cues swelling, plus gunfire, explosions, and subsonic bass: It’s all here, in abundance. In fact, there’s so much going on that it tends to get a bit wearying by the time the big final shoot-’em-up rolls to its predictable conclusion.
