AT&T Announces New Streaming Package in Wake of Time Warner Merger

AT&T today announced the WatchTV streaming video package that will let wireless subscribers stream more than 30 channels through a new app in addition to providing access to more than 15,000 TV shows and movies on demand.

The announcement comes a week after a judge approved the mega merger between AT&T and Time Warner.

The package will be available at no addition cost to subscribers of two wireless plans AT&T is launching next week: AT&T Unlimited & More and AT&T Unlimited & More Premium.

AT&T said subscribers to these plans will be able to stream through a new WatchTV app compatible with “virtually every current smartphone, tablet, or web browser, and certain streaming devices.”

The top AT&T Unlimited & More Premium package will include the music streaming services Amazon Music Unlimited and Pandora Premium with an option to add one of five additional channels — HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, or VRV — at no extra charge.

“Access to high-definition video” was cited in the press release but with a qualifying footnote: “AT&T may slow data speeds when the network is congested. Video may be limited to SD.”

Full details on the new wireless plans will be available at att.com/unlimited when the new plans launch next week, AT&T said, noting that WatchTV will be offered as a $15/month standalone service “soon.”

Touting the virtues of the historic merger, AT&T said: “Our merger brings together the elements to fulfill our vision for the future of media and entertainment. We’ll bring a fresh approach to how media and entertainment works for you — including new offerings that integrate content and connectivity.”
