Frozen—Anchor Bay (Blu-ray)

Video: 3/5

Extras: 3/5

A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for three snowboarders when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that they've been left behind dangling high off the ground with no way down. With the resort closed until the following weekend and frostbite and hypothermia already setting in, the trio is forced to take desperate measures to escape off the mountain before they freeze to death. Once they make their move, they discover with horror that they have much more to fear than just the frigid cold. As they combat unexpected obstacles, they start to question if their will to survive is strong enough to overcome the worst way to die.

It isn’t hard to tell that this was shot on a modest budget. The picture quality isn’t bad, but lacks the polish we typically see from bigger Hollywood productions. Fine detail isn’t quite reference quality and there is a fair amount of ringing seen in the picture. Black levels are solid though and shadow detail was better than I was expecting. There is a bit of noise in the image but it actually adds a bit to the overall look of the film. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 mix is impressive. Not only are the dynamics of the sound design robust, but the film has an effectively moody presence to it that is amplified by the score and subtle sound mix.

Extras include two feature commentaries along with a nice mix of behind the scenes features that delve into the production and story. You also get some deleted scenes and a trailer.

While I wasn’t particularly fond of the acting in this one, the premise definitely raises pulses. You’ll find yourself more than uncomfortable with the situation and probably covering your eyes and things go from bad to worse. Definitely worth catching for horror and thriller fans alike.
