I have found that a critical question for those who love Netflix AND 5.1 Surround Sound is to find out if the Netflix application/interface on each streaming player is outfitted with the ability to process Dolby Digital + 5.1 Surround Sound.
My first Roku device (the XD|S) only played Netflix in 2.0 Stereo, even though the Amazon app played some movies in 5.1 - on the very same physical device. The only way for me to get 5.1 on Netflix via Roku, was to purchase their latest player - the "Roku 2" (and I went for the XS model). My point/question is, does the Netflix app have the full Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 or just the 2.0 Stereo on the Netgear player? Bigger question, which streaming players does Netflix have the ability to do the full 5.1 Surround Sound?
As an additional point, my Oppo BDP-93 Blu*Ray player only has 2.0 Stereo when playing ALL movies from its Netflix application versus 5.1 that is available on the Vudu application on the same unit. I questioned Oppo about this several times. The first response I got back was that they were working with Netflix on co-developing/updating the interface to handle 5.1 and that it would likely be provided in a firmware upgrade. However, after several more firmware upgrades have come and gone, the Netflix app is still only providing 2.0 Stereo sound. Subsequent communications with Oppo now indicate that it is not likely that they will be able to provide 5.1 Surround on this model (BDP-93). I find this a bit disappointing - especially on a Blu*Ray player such as the Oppo that is regarded as one of the best of the best and a Home Theater Top Pick. For the kind of coin it goes for, I thought I would at least get 5.1 Surround Sound out of Netflix - thus, this is why I still have the Roku.
