For high-definition movies and TV shows without leaving the sofa, Microsoft has begun offering entertainment downloads from six major providers, including Warner and Paramount. The downloads are available over a broadband Internet connection via the Xbox Live network. Recent Hollywood hits use a pay-per-view rental model, with 14 days to start and then 24 hours to finish. Microsoft sells favorite small-screen episodes outright, and they even include the standard-def version at no extra charge. Prices (in Microsoft Points) and file sizes vary—not all content is available at HD quality—but 720p movies can weigh in at over 6 gigabytes each. Good thing Microsoft sells extra hard drives.
