LG to Update 2016 Smart TV Platform

LG has announced that its 2016 smart TV lineup will have an updated webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform designed to make it "simple and fast" to find and switch between content from broadcast TV, streaming services, and external devices.

Slated for unveiling at the upcoming CES trade show, LG’s 2016 TVs will offer new features including Magic Zoom, which magnifies objects and letters without degrading picture quality, and Magic Mobile Connection for connecting a smartphone via the LG TV Plus App so you can display mobile apps on the big screen.

LG has also added power and menu buttons as well as enhanced DVR control to its onscreen Magic Remote to make it easier to control set-top boxes.

Other features include:

  • Channel Plus, which provides access to free Internet content from broadcasters and publications such as The Wall Street Journal in a user-friendly format.
  • Channel Advisor, which displays upcoming time slots with information about frequently-watched programs.
  • Multi-view for watching two different sources simultaneously.
  • Music Player, an app for playing music through the TV’s speakers even when the set is turned off.
  • My Channels and Live Menus, upgraded to allow up to 10 favorite channels to be checked without leaving the current channel.
  • IoTV app, which enables onscreen control of smart home appliances from LG and other manufacturers.
