LED to Dominate LCDs

LED backlighting for LCD displays has already surpassed CCFL backlighting in performance, energy efficiency, and overall hipness. And LED eventually will beat CCFL again in sheer numbers, predicts the Quarterly LED Backlight Report by DisplaySearch.

The figures cover "large area" LCDs including those used for laptops as well as TVs. However, the more specific TV numbers follow a similar train of thought. LED backlit LCD sets will grow from the current 2010 penetration rate of 20 percent, or 36.5 million units, to 72 percent penetration, or 184.9 million units in 2015.

In large LCDs overall, including TV and other uses, LED backlighting will take over more than half of the LCD market by 2011, achieve 74 penetration by 2013, and grow from 114 million units shipped for all applications in 2009 to 770 million units in 2015.

Reducing the cost of parts will help drive the growth of LED LCDs. "Three main components will play a role in reducing costs: LED chips, light guide plates and dual brightness enhancement films," said an analyst.
