True Romance—Warner Bros. (Blu-ray)

Video: 3/5
Audio: 3.5/5
Extras: 3.75/5

Runaway lovers Clarence and Alabama play a dangerous game when they come to possess a suitcase of mob contraband. They head for Los Angeles, where they'll sell the goods and begin a new life. But both sides of the law have other ideas.

Tony Scott delivers with this wild ride based on the script by Tarantino. Plenty of star power on display and the film still oozes a very cool vibe. A notable addition to the Warner catalog collection on Blu-ray.

Scott’s film has always had a bit of a drab look to it. The film has a lot of darker scenes and a cool bluish look to it. The focus is also a bit on the soft side making this Blu-ray presentation a bit soft compared to most titles out there. There is still a nice sense of dimension but you can’t help but think detail could have been a bit better. Contrast levels are strong and I didn’t notice any signs of compression artifacts but there is some minor film wear and tear throughout. I was hoping for a bit more here.

The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack marks the first film from Warner that I’ve seen that actually defaults to the TrueHD mix. Kudos on that one. The mix overall is quite dynamic but also a bit forward. The soundtrack has a rather bright quality to it at times and I found the effect a bit harsh. The surround soundstage is quite captivating though with plenty of split surround use and lots of action.

Extras include three separate feature length commentaries with various members of the cast and crew and even one with Tarantino. You also get some deleted scenes and an alternate ending. Some production features and the trailers are also included.

One of Tony Scott’s best films makes its debut on Blu and honestly, the results is a bit of a mixed bag. The video is good, but I felt it could be better. The audio is largely the same. Still, it is nice to see this one makes it way to HD.
