Salt—Columbia Pictures (Blu-ray)

Video: 4.5/5
Audio: 4.5/5
Extras: 3.5/5

Before becoming a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. She will prove loyal to these when a defector accuses her of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture, protect her husband, and stay one step ahead of her colleagues at the CIA.

Salt is a great looking Blu-ray disc with plenty of rich color and detail. The photography delivers plenty of depth and dimensionality and doesn’t succumb to the overzealous stylization that we see so much from films in this genre. The color palette is very natural in tone and balance and contrast is never exaggerated. The DTS-HD Master Audio mix provides plenty of fun with nice dynamic range and a very engaging surround mix. The action sequences really liven things up with nice sidewall and surround imaging and a solid bottom end that will give the subs a nice workout. Dialogue is balanced nicely within the mix and imaging overall is dead on.

Extras on this one give you a lot of insight into the making of the film with themed features that cover just about every aspect of the production. You also get three separate cuts of the film, including a director’s cut and extended unrated edition. The director provides a commentary and there are some interactive features such as picture-in-picture and Sony’s MovieIQ.

Jolie takes a pretty decent stab at becoming the new female Jason Bourne with this one. The film moves at a frantic rate from beginning to end and manages to be a lot of fun throughout. Sony does a superb job with the presentation making this one an easy recommendation for a fun night at the movies.

I was impressed with the way she did the stunts. True, she was harnessed as she jumped from ledge to ledge or truck to truck, but still, she was amazing! A lot of kids could have lost a mother!
