My Best Friend’s Girl—Lionsgate (Blu-ray)

Video: 3.5/5
Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3.75/5

Smart, beautiful and headstrong, Alexis is the girl of Dustin's dreams. But after only five weeks of dating, the love-struck Dustin is coming on so strong that Alexis is forced to slow things down - permanently. Devastated and desperate to get her back, Dustin turns to his best friend, Tank, the rebound specialist. A master at seducing - and offending - women, Tank gets hired by freshly dumped guys to take their ex-girlfriends out on the worst date of their lives - an experience so horrible it sends them running gratefully back to their beaus. But when Tank works his magic on Alexis, he ends up meeting the challenge of a lifetime. Alexis is the first girl who knows how to call his bluff, and Tank soon finds himself torn between his loyalty to Dustin and a strange new attraction to his best friend's girl.

This is an interesting approach to the romantic comedy genre. Cook plays a foul mouth jerk that is hired by ex-boyfriends to go out with their ex-girlfriend and remind them just how good they had it. Only problem is, he ends up falling for his best friend’s ex. This brings on some soul searching and advice from his womanizing dad (played brilliantly by Alec Baldwin). The comedy is extremely crude and vulgar so this may or may not sit well on date night. If you’re the kind of couple that doesn’t mind some dirty humor though, this is a laugh riot that manages to have some real heart too.

The HD presentation looks pretty good but falls short of the reference category. The image is on the dark side with strong contrast and good black levels but the darker imagery hurt dimensionality a bit. Color balance is very natural and brighter sequences have a nice sense of depth. Detail is good overall but fine detail was lacking at times.

The soundtrack has a nice sense of spatial design and relies heavily on the film’s music selections to open things up. Dynamics are good for the genre and the track was involving enough to help the mood of the film. Dialogue was balanced nicely within the mix and tone and timbre was very natural. Surrounds do a nice job with subtle ambiance and help keep the mix engaging.

This release features both the theatrical and unrated cuts of the film and quite a few supplements. Two audio commentaries are included along with a couple of production features that look at the making of the film and include interviews with the cast and crew. Some deleted scenes and a funny sexist rating system feature are also included. Lionsgate supports their MoLog feature via BD-Live, which gives you the opportunity to add things to the film including text and share it with friends. Disc two also features a digital copy for your portable devices.

I didn’t have high hopes for this one going in but it turned out to be pretty fun overall. Its raunchy brand of humor may not be for everyone but if you can handle it I would definitely recommend this one for date night.
