Dexter: The Third Season—Showtime (Blu-ray)

Video: 4.5/5
Audio: 4.25/5
Extras: 2/5

Having faced some of his darkest demons, Dexter's ready to put the past behind him. Now, with family life, a day job catching killers and an uncontrollable urge to do away with the ones that get away, Dexter's got his work cut out for him. And when a high-profile case sides him with powerful Assistant DA Miguel Prado, the pressure might be too great for even our beloved Dexter to hack.

You might call this one the family values season. Dexter not only finds out he’s going to be a Dad, but gets engaged and befriends the assistant District Attorney. This friendship isn’t without the typical drama though as the new ADA wants to share Dexter’s dark secret and has some of his own. This show continues to be one of the best thrillers on TV, but this season didn’t grab me quite as much as the last two.

The visual style remains intact for this third season. Detail is impeccable and colors are as overblown as ever. The HD photography really does provide some sweet eye candy but the blown out whites and obvious color issues can distract. I did notice some occasional shimmer here and there as well but overall there is plenty to like here.

The soundtrack is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and also keeps up with the previous episodes. The show’s score is full bodied enough and the soundstage does have an airy quality to it. I noticed some strain in the dialogue from time to time but nothing overly distracting. Dynamic range is there when it needs to be but this isn’t an aggressive mix.

Extras are all in the form of BD-Live content so a BD-Live capable player and internet connection are required. You get a look at the book along with some sneak peeks at other Showtime shows currently airing. Interviews are also included with the principle cast.

Despite being a tad weaker than the first two seasons, Dexter is still one of my favorite shows out there. Showtime delivers a great A/V presentation for this one and we’ll be anxiously awaiting the next installment. Highly recommended.
