Elac Unveils Versatile, App-Controlled Amp

The new Element EA101EQ-G amplifier from Germany’s Elac delivers a lot more than just power.

The compact stereo amp ($699), provides app-controlled signal processing for “extensive customization of playback,” automated room calibration, and diverse connection options, including Bluetooth/aptX, an asynchronous USB interface that handles hi-res audio, and digital inputs (two optical, one coaxial) that decode Dolby Digital and accept S/PDIF signals at up to 192-kHz resolution. The amp also has two analog inputs plus subwoofer and headphone outputs.

The Auto Blend and Calibrate (ABC) function is said to improve sound in any room by first determining the ideal crossover frequency and phase relationship between the main speakers and subwoofer and then optimizing the sound based on room acoustics. The calibration routine is easily activated via the EA101-EQ-G app (for iOS and Android devices), which has a remote-control learning feature to facilitate seamless integration with a TV or set-top box.

The EA101EQ-G delivers 2 x 40 watts of power (8 ohms @ 1 kHz) and employs BASH technology, which is said to combine the best of Class D and Class AB. “By combining a fast response power converter with a linear amplifier, BASH is able to maintain both class AB sonic performance and efficiency approaching Class D,” Elac said.
