DVD Review: 28 Weeks Later
Touchstone Movie ••• Picture ••• Sound •••½ Extras •• |
The social satire and freewheeling indie-film sensibility that powered director Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later are but a memory in this gore-drenched sequel. But those with a taste for horror will find much here to, uh, sink their teeth into.
The payoff comes whenever the film's virus-infected zombies rampage for human flesh. As director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and producer Enrique López Lavigne explain on their otherwise lackluster commentary, when those scenes occur, "the movie gets infected, too," with an overcranked, hypersaturated look and feel unlike anything ever committed to film. The 1.85:1 transfer is sharp and clean throughout these difficult sequences. And the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is appropriately intense.
Apart from that halting commentary, there are three deleted scenes and an hour-long documentary filled with empty blather from the cast.
