...clearly doesn't understand how digital audio even works, nor have they ever listened and compared DACs. Anyone with EARS can hear the difference between the stock DACs in phones and an outboard DAC like this! Even with the crap headphones that are usually supplied free with the phone.

If you can't hear the difference (or, more likely) can't be bothered to listen and hear for yourself, then go buy the crappiest POS cable you can get and use it and be happy.

DragonFly Black is a great quality DAC/AMP for headphones. It is both highly portable and affordable. The Red at $199 improves the quality at still reasonable price. However at $299 Cobalt enters the market of dedicated (larger) dedicated Headphone DAC meant for laptops / Desktops.
I own a Red and love it. I use it with my cell and closed back over the ear Headphones. High quality Headphone DAC/AMP are mostly meant for high end open back headphones, which often require a higher output amp and a Upper end Hi-res DAC chip to extract the most out of the Higher end Headphone.
I'm staying put with my RED for my cell, and Schitt DAC for home.

I am currently shopping for a new DAC and will probably end up with a Schiit Bifrost 2 or Gungnir. Which DAC are you using?

For listening through my headphones at home, I use a Schitt Lyr Headphone AMP & DAC.

Bit the bullet and ordered the Gungnir Multibit. Went a little over budget...thought it was $899, but the Multibit version was $1250. Ouch! Feels like I just passed a kidney stone, but I am sure I will feel better when I get it hooked up!

then one can do much better and sometimes cheaper as well. Especially if one don't buy into the lossy MQA scheme.
