RIVA Audio has a great back story. Like a terrific, rock-and-roll, party-all-night back story. And the company’s WAND (Wireless Audio Network Design) series of speakers have gotten solid reviews for terrific sound design. (But don’t take my word for it. Read Sound & Vision editor-in-chief Rob Sabin’s full WAND review here. ) However the initial WAND series was limited to just two products, the Arena and Festival. This is great if you wanted to scatter desktop speakers around your home, but not so great if you wanted to enjoy great sounding tunes using your own speakers. RIVA has heard your cries and come to your aid! Meet the CENTRAL!
Samung made a huge statement as the 2018 CES was preparing to open—and we mean "huge"—with the introduction of The Wall, a 146-inch diagonal micro LED display that is expected to reach the consumer market later this year. Meanwhile, enthusiasts should cheer the company's new Q series quantum dot LCD UHDTVs, which will include the Q9S, an 85-inch model with 8K resolution, and the Q9, a more mainstream UHD set that marks the return of high-performance full-array local dimming to Samsung's premium model.
Sennheiser has always been known for exceptional sound quality in their headphone lineup, and now they’re expanding into new territory with the new over-ear HD 820 with a closed-back design.
Sennheiser, a world leader in high-performance headphones, premiered its new Ambeo 3D Soundbar at CES, the company’s first foray into the soundbar market. The speaker is designed to be an all-in-one solution that won’t require a subwoofer to deliver full-range, room filling sound.
First off, don’t call this beautiful objet d’art an “umbrella.” God, no! ShadeCraft founder and CEO Armen Gharabegian stated, “We are to umbrellas as self-driving cars are to the horse and wagon.” This, dear readers, is an intelligent shading system robot designed to call to mind the elegant beauty of a sunflower as it gracefully traces and tracks the sun’s movement across the sky, keeping you shaded while enjoying the great outdoors and an adult beverage. But the Sunflower is also oh so much more!
With so many companies making big announcements, Shure is going low-key with an announcement about a new line of detachable cable options for their wireless earphones. It doesn’t seem like much to get excited about, but it actually is.
Audio software experts from Sonarworks just announced a new app that eliminates the inaccurate coloration introduced by most consumer headphones to create a flat, “studio reference” sound from over 100 popular headphones.
Audio product news is sparse at Sony's booth for this CES, but the headliner at its press conference was a compact, 3.1-channel soundbar/wireless subwoofer combo that touts compatibility with Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks.
Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s head honcho for the US market, gave Sony’s entire press event standing in front of a huge screen with constantly changing images (though all of them stills). There was no information provided as to what sort of display the screen was, but I plan to inquire later in the show as it was perhaps the most impressive display shown during the entire press day. But it’s apparently not a technology currently used in a consumer product...
CES, of course, is all about consumer electronics. And as you've probably noticed, today's cars are jam-packed with electronics. But that's nothing compared to what's coming down the road in the near future.
Don't you hate it when your phone battery runs out when you're in the middle of streaming "In a Gadda Da Vida"? That won't happen with the SVS Prime Wireless. You can start a stream from the six presets on the front panel.
