Monoprice Ships 16-Inch Monolith THX Ultra Sub

Monoprice is now shipping the 16-inch THX Ultra-certified subwoofer it announced in August.

The newest model in the company’s ever-expanding Monolith by Monoprice series of affordable high-end audio products, the $2,300 subwoofer joins the 13-inch THX Ultra-certified model that shipped last month. The Monolith series also includes the HTP-1 surround-sound processor, Sound & Vision’s Top Pick of the Year in 2020.

Both subwoofers have passed rigorous testing to ensure they can reach THX Reference levels with low distortion in large rooms with up to 3,000 cubic feet of space and feature a flexible enclosure with four ports that can be configured for sealed, semi-sealed, and ported operation.

In both models, a high-excursion driver is mated with a Texas Instruments 48-bit digital signal processor (DSP) that feeds a Class D amplifier rated to deliver 2,000 watts RMS, 3,800 watts peak. The job of the DSP is to “deliver a precise, flat response from 16Hz to 250Hz and maintain that accuracy at peak volume with minimal added distortion and artifacts,” according to Monoprice.

Weighing in at 171 pounds, the 16-inch model measures 25.5 x 22 x 28 inches and is rated to play down to 14 Hz in a vented, dual-port configuration. A tad less imposing, the 13-inch model weighs 153 pounds and measures approximately 24 x 20 x 28 inches with a low-frequency rating that dips down to 16Hz in a vented, three-port configuration.

Rear-panel controls include variable phase, level, and a 40-160Hz adjustable crossover with a bypass mode, Extended EQ and THX EQ settings, selectable signal turn-on (always on/auto), and auto turn-off. One balanced XLR and two RCA inputs are provided along with a balanced XLR output.

Cabinets are made of internally braced, high-density fiberboard to minimize vibration and unwanted resonance and the ports are flared at both ends to minimize turbulence and maximize sound-pressure levels at low frequencies. Finish is simulated gray oak woodgrain.

Monoprice offers a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy and backs both models with a five-year warranty. For more information on the 16-inch Monolith by Monoprice subwoofer, visit monoprice.com. Click here for more detail on the 13-inch subwoofer.
