DEG Cites Sony and Warner Bros. for 4K Excellence

Last night at its annual CES reception, the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) announced that its 2019 Excellence in 4K UHD Awards go to Sony for its Master Series A9F OLED TV and Warner Bros. for the remastered 4K version of the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The awards were selected by a panel of product reviewers from home theater enthusiast and business publications.

The Sony AF9 TV, recipient of DEG’s Excellence in 4K Product Award, was deemed to consistently deliver outstanding audio/video performance, convenience, and versatility.

As recipient of the Excellence in 4K Content Award, the Warner Bros. 4K Blu-ray release of 2001: A Space Odyssey was cited for demonstrating excellence in 4K image capturing/transferring, HDR encoding, wide color rendering, and immersive audio.

DEG leadership also awarded the second Emiel N. Petrone Innovation in Entertainment Technology Award to Dolby Laboratories for its Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) format, which uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize video images frame by frame.

In bestowing the award, which recognizes a “recent technology development that has created new opportunities for the home entertainment industry,” the DEG noted that Dolby Vision was “developed in collaboration with a wide range of studios, creatives, and post-production partners” and praised the technology for preserving artistic intent and “transforming the entertainment experience with ultra-vivid picture quality — including incredible brightness, contrast, color, and detail — and dynamic metadata. The result is a uniquely refined, lifelike image.”

"DEG member companies move quickly to meet consumers' desire for more immersive home and mobile viewing experiences, and they regularly introduce consumers to new possibilities," said DEG President and CEO Amy Jo Smith. "DEG is delighted to recognize Sony Electronics, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Dolby Laboratories as purveyors of best-in-class viewing experiences."
