Can I Route 4K Movies Through My Soundbar?
Got a tech question for Sound & Vision? Email us at AskSandV@gmail.com
Q I have a Vizio M70-C3 UHD TV, a Roku 4 streaming media device, and a Sony HT-XT1 Sound Base. My question is, can the Sony’s HDMI passthrough route 4K movies from the Roku to the HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 input on the Vizio TV? — Damon J. Jackson / via email
A I wouldn’t count on it. The HT-XT1 was released in 2014, so its connectors are likely to be HDMI version 1.4. Passing 4K content from a Roku 4 requires an HDMI 2.0 connection with HDCP 2.2 content protection. In this case, my suggestion would be to connect the Roku directly to the Vizio TV, which has an HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 input, and then use its optical digital connection to route 5.1 audio to the Sony Sound Base.
