CEDIA announced the 15 winners of its 2018 Home Technology Professional Awards competition last night at a celebration held in San Diego’s Petco Park. The awards program recognizes exemplary home entertainment/smart-home projects completed by home technology professionals this year. Winners were selected by a panel of industry experts.

CEDIA Expo opens today in San Diego and runs through Saturday, September 8. The 2018 version of the trade show will bring together more than 20,000 professionals involved in the $14 billion home technology industry. In addition to CEDIA’s robust educational program, this year’s show will feature 500-plus exhibits showcasing a broad range of the latest in audio/video, home theater, and smart-home technology.

Most audiophiles (and I am one) prefer a listening chair that doesn’t rise above their head, thereby blocking reflections from the rear wall. Home theater can be the same, but home theater enthusiasts (I’m one of those, too) are a bit more casual, and would prefer to watch a movie flat out in a favorite recliner, oblivious to their head being blocked from the rear...

Definitive Technology updated its two Wi-Fi streaming soundbars by upgrading their TV connections, enabling voice control through Google Assistant-enabled devices, and shifting their underlying wireless multiroom-audio platforms to Chromecast built in (CCBI) from DTS Play-Fi. Meanwhile, sister brand Polk unveiled two entry-level soundbars.

Epson is showcasing its new Enhanced 4K Pro Cinema 4050 LCD projector here at CEDIA Expo 2018. It’s said to offer, compared to earlier Epsons, improved brightness, higher contrast, better HDR, and a newly optimized 4K pixel shift. It’s claimed to provide 2400 lumens of peak brightness (presumably in the High lamp setting), a contrast ratio of 200,000:1, and 100% coverage of P3 color.

The EPV Screens booth at CEDIA highlighted one of the company’s latest projection screen offerings for ultra-short throw projectors. By filtering out light coming from overhead, the 0.5-gain DarkStar UST eFinity allows for pictures with ample brightness and contrast in high ambient light environments.
