Because I suffer from a rare form of workophobia and isolationism, I sometimes have to take a timeout from the world at large and listen to music or some sort of hypnotic trance-inducing soundscape. Lying down with headphones is difficult, at best, and even using in-ear monitors can be uncomfortable when you’re lying on your side. Of course, then there’s the headphone/earbud cable albatross around your neck that invariably gets caught on something and yanks one of the buds out of your ear or wraps around your neck almost strangling you.

SleepPhones calls its headphone-embedded headband “pajamas for your ears”, and they’re designed to be...

You’ve heard of Google Glass, now make way for Toshiba Glass. It certainly sounds much the same. And that was just one of the ways Toshiba’s booth was dramatically different than in the past...

The Internet of Things has expanded to include a new high performance rifle from TrackingPoint nicknamed the “Mile Maker” for its “tag and shoot” technology that virtually guarantees anyone can hit a plate-sized target at up to one mile even on targets moving up to 30 mph! This technology puts the level of shooting skills the likes of Navy SEAL and Delta Force snipers that have spent years honing their craft into virtually anyone’s trigger finger.

First, a word of clarification: Ultimate Ears is a brand of Logitech. As you might surmise, UE handles the audio products, while Logitech is more computer focused. Now, the product news: UE's first portable wireless speaker was the UE Boom. As you might expect, the Megaboom is the new and improved version. It features more power, louder sound, and more bass. Ergo, it is better.

Ultra-D is a development of Stream TV Networks, in conjunction with partnering companies, to offer glasses free 3D. Their press event was a less elaborate affair than those above (though the awful photograph shown here is largely my fault!).

Haier is a Chinese brand less well known here than TCL or Hisense, much less Vizio, Samsung, or Sony. It did show some very nice looking sets in a large, tastefully decorated booth, but like Changhong above, it needs to increase its market presence significantly before most consumers will recognize its name.

I’ve seen plenty of cool product concepts in my time. A lot of them, perhaps the majority, have imploded along the way as the fragile dreamscape of the theoretical world is thoroughly trashed by the much harsher, take-no-prisoners landscape of the real world. Since nothing other than beta units have shipped yet, it’s not possible to tell whether or not Ecovent’s intelligent HVAC vents and environmental sensor network will manage to be more than a brief blast of hot air. But I truly hope so, because it’s one the most exciting products I can every remember coming across.

Put simply, Ecovent makes...

Westinghouse’s new NUCLI deadbolt locking system is one of the most amazing and ambitious electronic door locks I’ve seen to date. The NUCLI replaces a standard deadbolt lock with no modifications necessary for most doors. What makes this lock stand out amongst a myriad of smart locks hitting the market is…

Wolf Cinema has consistently offers the best home theater setups at CES’s Venetian hotel venue. That’s probably not saying much, as the displays at the convention center are dominated by flat panels and the Venetian is mainly high-end audio heaven. CEDIA EXPO, held in September, is the show for projector-based home theater demos...

Most of us have made hand gestures at the TV at one point or another over the years, and they haven’t always been the nicest of hand signals. eyesight Technologies’s singlecue is an AV remote control and home automation interface that wants you to use hand gestures to control your AV system as well as all sorts of home automation devices in throughout your home.

The competition among smart speakers is heating up. In fact, it is already red hot. There are any number of choice products to choose from, with more pouring in. Another new entry is the Avy smart speaker from Zettaly. This is an Android-powered speaker with a couple of nice twists.
