How Can I Listen to Vinyl on My Old Sonos Setup?

Got a tech question for Sound & Vision? Email us at AskSandV@gmail.com

Q I have a Technics SL-J33 turntable and an NAD PP4 preamp. I wish to listen to my vinyl collection through my Sonos speaker setup, which consists of a Play:5 (Gen 1), a Playbar, a Sub (Gen 1), and Niles outdoor speakers. I run through a Sonos ZP80 preamp that feeds into a Yamaha RX-V495 receiver. I haven’t found any workable solutions through my own online searches. Can you please help? —Bill Pilat

A This should be doable with your existing setup, but it is also possible that your Sonos ZP80 — which is over 18 years old at this point — isn’t functioning properly. Your Yamaha receiver is even older... If you connect the output of your NAD PP4 preamp to the input of the ZP80, you should be able to go into the settings menu of the Sonos app and configure the ZP80’s line input — name it and adjust the level gain and delay.

Then you would just select that input as the source when you wanted to listen to it; this setup should also give you the ability to group the turntable with the Playbar and Play:5 for whole-house listening. If that doesn’t work, it might be time to replace the ZP80 with a new Port, which definitely supports this feature and is compatible with both the Sonos S1 and S2 apps.

To listen to vinyl on your old Sonos setup, you can connect a turntable to a compatible Sonos device using a line-in connection or an external amplifier.
