TCL Delivers Dolby Vision for Under $500

Best known for its affordable TVs with built-in Roku streaming capability, TCL is showing three new UHDTV lineups at CES, including the company’s top-of-the-line P Series sets.

Witht prices starting at just $499 for a 50-inch model, the P Series will be the most affordable Dolby Vision high dynamic range-capable UHDTVs on the market when they arrive this spring. The sets, which will also be available in 55- and 65-inch screen sizes, include a full-array LED backlight with 72-zone local dimming (TCL calls them “Contrast Control” zones). The company isn’t releasing specs on peak brightness or color gamut coverage, but the model I checked out in TCL’s booth looked pretty impressive displaying Dolby Vision clips.

As you’d expect from TCL, the P Series UHDTVs will have built-in Roku capability, allowing you to stream Dolby Vision and HDR10 content directly to the set over a wired connection or 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The P Series sets also provide three HDMI 2.0a inputs, so you can hook up an Ultra HD Blu-ray player — preferably one of the forthcoming models from LG and OPPO that are Dolby Vision-capable.
