PSB’s ‘Micro Planar’ Wireless Earbuds Loaded with Tech

PSB is now shipping an updated and improved version of the M4U TWM wireless earbuds it announced last year.

The newest model in PSB’s longstanding M4U line of headphones, the $199 earbuds feature a dual-driver hybrid “micro planar” design and three sound enhancing technologies: RoomFeel, Audiodo Personal Sound, and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth for high quality, low-latency wireless sound.

Known for advancing loudspeaker design through decades of work at Canada’s renowned National Research Council (NRC), PSB founder and chief designer Paul S. Barton wanted to create a headphone experience that would make the listener feel as though s/he was listening to a pair of high-quality speakers in a room. The goal was to “make music feel less ‘in the head’ by recreating an open and natural in-room listening experience headphones” and to do so without altering the original audio signal. Using research and expertise around “room gain” — the energy and warmth room boundaries add to the response curve of a flat-measuring loudspeaker — he developed the proprietary RoomFeel technology used in the M4U TWS and PSB’s M4U9 and M4U 8 MKII headphones.

The earbuds also incorporate technology developed by Sweden’s Audiodo that uses “a non-replicable set of algorithms” to calibrate sound based on the unique qualities of the listeners’ hearing. Accessed through the PSB Headphones app, the program uses test tones to assess the hearing acuity of each ear and calculates a custom EQ curve that is stored as a preset along with other EQ settings.

Sound is produced by a hybrid planar-magnetic driver configuration with two transducers, one for high frequencies and one for low frequencies, an arrangement said to produce “crisp highs, natural midrange, and deep lush bass.”

Battery life is rated for up to 8 hours on a full charge with an additional 24 hours available using the USB charging case. Music and calls are controlled by hard-click buttons on both earbuds.

The M4U TWS earbuds carry an IP65 rating, meaning the earbuds are resistant to dust and able to withstand water sprays. Silicon tips are provided in three sizes to ensure a snug, comfortable fit. For more information, visit psbspeakers.com.
