Monoprice Adds Mini-Tower Subs to THX Lineup

Monoprice is on a roll with the expansion of its upscale Monolith line, this time in the form of two new THX Certified Ultra subwoofers, both of which are rated to reach THX Reference levels with low distortion in rooms as big as 3,000 cubic feet.

The new M-210 ($1,300) M-212 ($1,800) powered subwoofers join the $2,300 16-inch and 13-inch subwoofers that shipped last fall.

Unlike the typical cube subwoofer, the new models feature two drivers stacked in a mini-tower enclosure that has the same footprint as the company’s single-driver subwoofers, making them ideal for system builders who don’t have room for two subs. The 162-pound M-210 has two 10-inch drivers and the 174-pound M-212 two 12-inchers in a vented cabinet standing just over 3 feet tall (36.4 x 17.7 x 23.6 inches) that operates as a sealed sub when a foam plug is inserted into its rectangular vent.

In both models, the pair of high-excursion, hybrid-cone drivers is mated with a Texas Instruments 48-bit digital signal processor (DSP) that feeds a Class D amplifier rated to deliver 1,000 watts RMS (1,800 watts peak). The DSP is designed to constantly monitor output and provide limiting and thermal protection when needed in addition to ensuring flat in-room response down to 16Hz while maintaining accuracy at peak output with “minimal added distortion” (<3.0% 20~100Hz, 94dB @ 1m).

The hybrid cone — a new ground-up, custom design — combines the “superior stiffness of long-fiber pulp with the additional rigidity and lightweight properties of fiberglass to deliver a driver capable of more than 90mm [3.5 inches] of peak-to-peak excursion,” according to Monoprice.

The M-210 and M-212 cabinets are internally braced and made of high-density fiberboard with a simulated black ash finish and fabric grille cover. Both models are equipped with an adjustable (40-160Hz) crossover, one balanced XLR input, two standard RCA inputs, and an XLR pass-through output.

Monoprice offers a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy and backs both models with a five-year warranty. For more information on the M210 subwoofer, visit monoprice.com. Click here for more detail on the M-212.
