Lassen Tweeter Simplifies 2-Way xMEMS Earbud Designs

xMEMS Labs has introduced Lassen, a new silicon MEMS tweeter for 2-way True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earbuds that eliminates the need for a separate piezo amplifier. xMEMS says this design cuts costs and power use. It also gives manufacturers more space to add advanced features. Lassen focuses on 6kHz to 20kHz, targeting clear, detailed highs.

Measuring a miniscule 3.2 x 5 x 1.15 mm, Lassen offers up to 115dB SPL from a standard 1Vrms audio output. xMEMS says the speaker consumes only microwatts of power, helping to extend battery life in compact earbuds. Removing the dedicated piezo amplifier reportedly cuts tweeter integration costs by about 25% compared to previous xMEMS solutions such as Cowell and Muir, while still delivering the company’s µFidelity (micro fidelity) performance.

For manufacturers, the transition to Lassen is simplified by xMEMS’ existing production platform. The new tweeter is fabricated in the same semiconductor wafer fabs as earlier xMEMS drivers, ensuring consistent quality and high-volume scalability. xMEMS notes that TWS designers who were impressed by its earlier high-performance MEMS speakers can now enjoy the same audio clarity without adding a separate amplification chip.

A 2-way earbud design pairs a dedicated tweeter with a low- or midrange driver, and xMEMS emphasizes that its solutions have helped raise sound quality beyond what single-driver earbuds typically achieve. Previous xMEMS speakers did require an external piezo amplifier, which some brands like Creative Labs and Soundpeats adopted, citing the significant improvement in fidelity. With Lassen, xMEMS aims to bring those benefits to a broader consumer market by simplifying the design process and lowering production costs.

Balanced armature and planar magnetic micro drivers have long been common choices for earbud tweeters, but xMEMS claims its solid-state approach delivers a higher level of detail and clarity—qualities that are increasingly in demand for spatial and high-resolution audio. Because Lassen uses a standard wafer-based production method, xMEMS also underscores the consistency and reliability of its product from unit to unit, a significant consideration for large-scale mass-market use.

By removing the barrier of needing a separate amplifier, xMEMS believes it can facilitate wider adoption of 2-way TWS earbuds. The company positions Lassen as both a cost-effective solution and a technology upgrade that helps audio brands stand out with enhanced treble performance.
