Respected advertising sales executive Dan Forman (Dennis Quaid) finds his job on the line when the magazine he works for is sold and young upstart Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) becomes his boss. To add insult to injury, Dan discovers that, after a chance meeting in the office, Carter is dating his college-age daughter, played by Scarlett Johansson. On the surface, the conflict between the two men seems to be youth versus experience. But, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Carter is far more envious of Dan's balanced life than Dan is of Carter's premature success.

The supplemental material includes a probing feature-length commentary track from Grace and director Paul Weitz that delves deeply into the characters and the performances. The deleted scenes are also supported by Weitz's narration, an inclusion that always provides valuable insight into the filmmaking process and makes for a more well-rounded DVD package. Instead of the predictable behind-the-scenes footage, the disc offers the well-produced "Synergy," a featurette that's divided into different subjects—such as the script's themes and the film's New York location—that the viewer can watch in order or skip around.

The DVD's 1.85:1 anamorphic picture offers natural-looking fleshtones and a muted color palette, with sharp edges and a lot of detail. And, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack doesn't get much of a workout in the way of special effects or music, the dialogue is upfront and easy to understand.
