Focal Scala Utopia Evo M Loudspeakers

Apparently, even utopia still has the option to evolve. What we mean by that is, the noted French manufacturer Focal have just introduced their new Scala Utopia Evo M loudspeakers, which are said to be (in their words) “a major evolution of an iconic model” in their Utopia line. More specifically, the Scala Utopia Evo M speakers incorporate two key innovations — namely, the PRISM tweeter and the M-profile W midrange — so let’s dig deeper into what both of these developments signify.

First, let’s look at the mids. The Scala Utopia Evo M speakers have adopted the M-profile midrange from the Utopia Main professional series, which combines a 5" reinforced W cone with a sandwich structure and one-piece M-profile geometry. This design combo is said to “guarantee” exceptional rigidity, ultra-linear frequency response, and very low distortion. It also features a TMD® (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension, a neodymium magnet, and an 80mm voice coil.

As for the inverted-dome PRISM 1 1/16" M-profile tweeter — which was also recently introduced on the company’s Diva Alta Utopia model — it sports a high-frequency cone that has been based on a multi-material combination and an advanced micro-structuring process said to achieve a higher level of rigidity than beryllium, while maintaining an optimum balance between lightness and damping.

Featuring IAL2 (Infinite Acoustic Loading) technology, the PRISM (short for Photon-Refined Intelligent Structured Membrane) tweeter offers specs of a bandwidth up to 40kHz, and a resonance frequency of 528Hz.

The Scala Utopia Evo M speakers’ TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) suspension is said limit cone deformation and reduces distortion in order to “preserve dynamics and sound definition,” and its 6 5/16" W woofer incorporates a 16cm dual-ferrite motor.

Also onboard is OPC+ (Optimum Phase Crossover), which is said to allow “precise” adjustment of bass and treble to suit the listening environment at hand, as well as Gamma and Focus Time technologies that are intended for “exemplary” temporal consistency and mechanical stability.

The Scala Utopia Evo M is available in five finishes. Three of them are premium lacquer (Black High Gloss, Off White High Gloss, and Warm Taupe High Gloss; the latter is shown above), and two of them are wood (Light Walnut with an Off White front panel, and Dark Walnut with a Sepia Brown front panel).

The Scala Utopia Evo M speakers’ wood cabinet is made by the company’s cabinetmakers in Burgundy, France, while the drivers are manufactured at its acoustic workshops in Saint-Étienne, France.

Focal suggests that the Utopia Evol M speakers can be thought of as being “the heart of a complete hi-fi system” and are also ideal partners for amplification and streaming systems by Naim — most especially the Naim 200 and 300 Series and Naim Uniti Nova PE models.

The Scala Utopia Evo M loudspeakers will be available beginning August 2026. As for the SRPs, the Black High Gloss, Off White High Gloss, and Warm Taupe High Gloss models are priced at $50,000 USD ($58,000 CAD), while the Light Walnut with an Off White front panel and Dark Walnut with a Sepia Brown front panel versions go for $56,000 U.S. ($64,000 Canadian).
