An engaged gal comes home to Pasadena for her sister’s wedding and suspects that her family may be the one the book and movie The Graduate is based on in this comedy that has tons of talent associated with it but never takes off. Sarah (Jennifer Aniston) finds out that the week before Mom married Dad, Mom got freaked out, ran off to Mexico, and had a quickie affair with a high-school big man on campus Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner). With that info and in doing the math, she realizes it’s conceivable that her dad…well, isn’t. She seeks out and finds the wealthy tech magnate Beau, whom she has a one-nighter with and gets some answers from.

The 1.85:1 anamorphic picture is warm and depicts the look of a well-heeled family skillfully. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is satisfactory but nothing distinctive. There are no extras. Shirley MacLaine is the now-grandma and past Mrs. Robinson who also has a bone to pick with her long-ago conquest, Beau. She’s given some great lines, but the boozy, acerbic, tart-of-a-grandma thing has been done. Costner’s Beau is nicely underplayed, and Aniston is first rate; but Mena Suvari and Mark Ruffalo as the sister and her fianc aren’t given much to do in unrewarding roles. The whole scheme of Beau sleeping with Grandma, Mom, and then the daughter is supposed to be charming, but it’s just kind of creepy, don’t you think? With Rob Reiner at the helm, Oscar winners, and other superb actors, how could this one go astray? It did.
