DC Restoration (poor, average, good, excellent): Excellent

Color Decoder (poor, average, good, excellent): Excellent

Measured Color Points: Red Color Point: x=0.644, y=0.344, Green Color Point: x=0.222, y=0.684, Blue Color Point: x=0.148, y=0.077

The left chart shows the VP-50's gray scale relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the 5400K color-temperature mode and the 2.2 gamma mode, measures slightly cool with the darkest images and bounces around D6500 (the accurate color temperature) throughout the rest of the gray-scale range. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale bounces a little less and stays somewhat closer to D6500 across most of the range.

The right chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue phosphors. With the exception of green, these are close to those specified by SMPTE. Green is oversaturated and slightly bluish-green.

Using a full-field 100-IRE white (17.8 foot-lamberts) and a full-field 0-IRE black (0.115 ft-L), the contrast ratio was 155:1. Using a 16-box checkerboard pattern (ANSI contrast), the contrast ratio was 268:1. The best contrast ratio was achieved in the contrast setting. On a 100-IRE window, the VP-50 was capable of 37.02 ft-L. It is normal for a plasma to have a brighter image with a 100-IRE window compared with a full-white field.—GM
