TEST BENCH

With the 47ZV650U's Movie/Color Temperature 2 presets selected, grayscale tracking measured +/- 152 degrees K of the 6,500-K standard from 20 to 100 IRE - very good performance. Adjustments made to the red, green, and blue Gain and Offset controls in the TV's Advanced Picture Settings menu helped to knock that back to 112 K from 20 to 100 IRE, and it also helped to correct a slight green depression in the set's grayscale.

Gamma measured around 2.0 in the default center position - slightly off from the 2.20 target. Viewing angle was excellent, with pictures retaining contrast and color fidelity over a 60º viewing arc. Screen uniformity was also very good, with no "clouding," tinting, or other anomalies visible on full-field gray test patterns at various brightness levels.

Color decoding was mostly accurate, with only a +2.5 green push standing in the way of perfection. The TV's primary color points measured very close to the SMPTE HD color specification, and the secondary ones were mostly accurate as well.

Overscan - the amount of picture area hidden behind the edges of the TV's screen - measured 0% for 1080i- and 1080p-format high-definition signals with the Native Pic Size mode selected. The TV displayed 1080i- and 720p-format test patterns at full resolution, and a 480i (DVD) resolution pattern revealed full detail via the component-video input. Video upconversion was very good, with the Toshiba passing pretty much the full suite of film and video resolution and jaggies tests on the HQV Blu-ray Discs when either the Standard or Smooth Film Stabilization options were selected. It also passed most tests on the DVD version of the HQV benchmark, tripping up only on the tough Assorted Cadence chapter.
