HT Labs Measures: Sony Grand Wega KF-50XBR800 LCD HD Monitor

The top chart shows the gray scale of the KF-50XBR800 HD monitor relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 95 IRE is bright white). As you can see, the gray scale as set by the factory, in the warm menu setting, measures very blue with dark images and leans more toward red with brighter images. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale measures within 85 Kelvin of D6500, the accurate setting, across most of the range. The gray scale was far more accurate after calibration, although the low window is still rather blue. The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the color points of the display's red, green, and blue LCDs. The color points are close to those specified by SMPTE. Green is greener than the ATSC spec, while blue is slightly purple. The light output was approximately 60 foot-lamberts. The KF-50XBR800 has an excellent color decoder. It has approximately 1,230 lines of horizontal resolution with 720p sources and measures out to the resolution of the 1,366-by-768 panels with 1080i sources.—GM
