HT Labs Measures: Philips Cineos 44PL977S LCOS HD Monitor

The top chart shows the gray scale of the Philips Cineos relative to its color temperature at various levels of intensity, or brightness (20 IRE is dark gray; 100 IRE is bright white). The gray scale as set by the factory, in the warm color-temperature mode, measures fairly blue with dark images and somewhat blue with brighter images. After making adjustments using the Photo Research PR-650, the gray scale measures slightly better, within 1,090 Kelvin of D6500, the accurate color temperature, across the entire range. This is a slight improvement compared with the performance before calibration. The bottom chart shows the gray scale (or color temperature) relative to the display's red, green, and blue color points. Green (x=0.297, y=0.658), red (x=0.627, y=0.333), and blue (x=0.156, y=0.036) are near those specified by SMPTE, which means that the display will be able to reproduce the colors available in the system. Green is oversaturated, red is undersaturated, and blue is oversaturated and slightly purple. The light output was approximately 87.4 foot-lamberts. The display has excellent DC restoration and an accurate color decoder. The 44PL977S displays approximately 480 lines (per picture height) with NTSC sources and, using our Leader LT-446 HD generator, is capable of resolving 720p HDTV signals out to approximately 680 and 1080i out to the limits of the 1,280-by-720 chip.—GM
