HD DVD Group Announces ‘07 Titles, Triple-Layer 51GB HD DVDs

Did the HD DVD Group announce a bunch of hot HD DVD titles that will be coming our way in ’07? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? HD DVD’s supporting studios will be releasing an awesome slate of new release and catalog titles, but for myself and fellow sci-fi buffs many of these pale compared to this double whammy: Not only has Warner announced that 2007 is the year that Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner will see a remastered release in HD, the remastered versions of the original Star Trek series will be released by Paramount on HD DVD this year as well. Someone pick me up off the floor!

The HD DVD Group also shared some hardware news, announcing that Onkyo and other less known manufacturers would be making players, and that a partnership between Broadcom and Microsoft will see some less expensive players hit the market. For those of us who live in and for the high-end, the bombshell was also dropped that Meridian will be introducing and HD DVD player in 2007! Although no details were provided, I’ve already emailed Meridian’s PR groups and started putting sugar on top of my pretty, pretty please!

It was also revealed that it’s been deemed as “technically feasible” to produce triple-layer HD DVD discs with 51GB capacity, which is predicated on moving the current layer capacity from the current 15GB to 17GB. It’s expected that this spec will be standardized in Q4 of this year.

Now, on to the other cool titles. Warner is just going nuts. In addition to releasing Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed The Departed, look for recent hits like Happy Feet, We Are Marshall, and another Leo flick, Blood Diamond. On top of that, watch out for hits of recent yesteryear such as the Matrix trilogy and all of the Harry Potter films, as well as Steve McQueen classics Bullitt and The Getaway.

In addition to the original Trek, Paramounts recent hits will include Clint Eastwood’s acclaimed Flags of Our Fathers and Babel as well as the Mel Gibson actioner Payback and John Woo’s Face/Off starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Universal will also be active, but the only title announced specifically was The Good Shepard starring Matt Damon, which is in theaters now.

What HD DVD is lacking in the number of studios appears somewhat mitigated by the fervor of its two biggest supporters, Warner and Universal. I say, keep ‘em comin’!
