I love vinyl. I love Classic Records and a few other companies that keep making it. Call me old school, but when I sit down to relax with music, it's the LP I reach for most times. So Classic's announcement that they're celebrating Impulse's 45th anniversary with a long list of 200g vinyl was well received by me at least. Some folks are jaded. I'm not. Thanks Classic, thanks Michael.

To what do you have to look forward? (And that folks, is how you end a sentence without a preposition). How about John Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard, or Duke Ellington and John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins on Impulse.. In total, over two dozen releases were announced, including works from Gil Evans, Art Blakey, Charley Mingus and Coleman Hawkins. Ha-cha-cha-cha.

Even bigger news. Classic has signed a joint venture deal with EMI Music recordings from a few dozen popular artists in EMI's stable, direct from the masters. Bands like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd and artists like James Taylor and Nat King Cole will be mastered on tube equipment and pressed on 200 gram vinyl.

Classic hasn't forgotten you classical listeners who gave them their start. A series of twenty-six magnetic film recordings from Everest have been cut directly from the film medium to a master disc using an all tube cutting system. Classic was kind enough to give me a copy of the de Falla's "Three Corner Hat," a recording with which I'm very familiar, although this performance is entirely new to me as it may well be to others as many of these works have been lost to obscurity or poorly reissued in the past. Can't wait to put it on when I get home!
