Sony and Amazon are joining forces in a joint video-on-demand effort. Amazon's VOD services will function through Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link.

An ambitious plan to bring high-speed interactive video services to cable subscribers in the New York area has been announced by <A HREF="http://www.sony.com/">Sony Corporation</A> and <A HREF="http://www.cablevision.com/">Cablevision Systems Corporation</A>. Sony will supply approximately 3 million set-top converter boxes to Cablevision customers.

Last week, <A HREF="http://www.world.sony.com">Sony</A> and <A HREF="http://www.candescent.com">Candescent Technologies</A>, a developer of flat panel displays (FPD), announced an agreement to extend their existing partnership. In October 1998, the two companies announced their initial agreement regarding the joint development of high voltage Field Emission Display (FED) technology for "next generation" thin, flat-panel displays. The new agreement extends their joint technology development partnership, under which the two companies say they will co-fund these activities, until December 2001.

Both <A HREF="http://www.cbs.com">CBS Television</A> and <A HREF="http://www.sony.com">Sony</A> report that they have recently entered into an agreement for CBS to produce the upcoming 2001 Sony Open golf tournament live in HDTV on the CBS Television Network starting January 20.

The results of the Value Electronics 18th Annual TV Shootout held in New York City over the weekend are in and it’s Sony and LG by a hair in the 4K and 8K test categories, respectively. For each brand, the win is a repeat performance of last year’s Shootout when Sony was crowned king of 4K TV and LG king of 8K TV.

The third corporate makeover in three years begins April 1 at <A HREF="http://www.sony.com/">Sony Corporation</A>. The electronics and media giant announced March 30 that it will create a new top-level management group to be called the "Global Hub," with responsibility for coordinating all of Sony's vast empire, including entertainment, electronics, games, and financial and Internet services. "We'd like to make it a highly efficient group headquarters," explained Sony chairman Nobuyuki Idei.

Sony announced an imminent update that will add high dynamic range (HDR) capability to its X850C, X900C, and X910C 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) TVs. The update was previously announced for X930C and X940C model TVs.
