Sony Announces 2015 4K Ultra HD TV Lineup

Sony has announced six new series of 4K Ultra HD TVs, four of which are available for pre-order with delivery set for May.

Pricing for the first wave of sets is as follows: $1,300 and $1,600 for 43- and 49-inch X830C models; $2,200, $3,500, and $5,000 for 55-, 65-, and 75-inch X850C models (shown); $4,500 for the 65-inch X930C; and $8,000 for the X940C.

No pricing has been announced for the 55- and 65-inch X900C series models or the 75-inch X910C, which are slated for delivery in the summer and hailed as the “thinnest LED TVs in the world.”

The X930C and X940C models will be compatible with High Dynamic Range (HDR) content via a network update. Sony said its X-tended Dynamic Range PRO (75-inch model) and X-tended Dynamic Range technologies (65-inch model) will display a wider range of brightness levels and deeper blacks. HDR content is expected to be available from Amazon and Netflix later this year.

Sony also announced new 1080p TVs, which will be available in May at the following prices: $480 and $530 for 40- and 48-inch R510C models, $1,000 for the 50-inch W800C, and $1,900 and $3,000 for 65- and 75-inch W850C models. A 55-inch W800C model will be available for pre-sale in June at $1,300.

All 2015 4K Ultra HD models are built around Sony’s X1 4K processor and the Android TV platform.

The X1, in conjunction with X-Reality PRO Picture Engine processing, is said to maximize contrast, color, and clarity with HD and 4K content. X850C series models and up will also feature Sony’s Triluminos display, offering dynamic color correction and Sony’s “widest color range ever.”

Calling it smarter TV, Sony said the Android TV platform has a voice search feature and is designed to provide a personalized and intuitive entertainment experience with easy access to apps like Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu and content from Google Play, Amazon Instant Video, PBS, PBS Kids, Epix, YuppTV, iHeartRadio, Madefire, PlutoTV, and Vevo. The TVs also support Google Cast for “casting” favorite apps such as HBO Go from an Android or iOS device or Mac/Windows computer or Chromebook laptop to the TV.
