It’s been no secret up to now that calibrating a display for high dynamic range (HDR) is a work in progress. But the recent release of an HDR10 workflow for CalMAN 2016 (the newest software from SpectraCal) promises to change that. CalMAN is widely used by calibrators and reviewers to optimize display setup.

HDR10 is one of the two most prominent HDR formats (though there are others lurking around looking for a niche). Both of these formats require specialized, and different, calibration techniques. A CalMAN workflow for the other format, Dolby Vision, has been around for several months.

But most UHD/HDR sets offer HDR10, as do all UHD Blu-rays to date, making an HDR10 calibration perhaps even more significant...

If you aren’t a Millennial, the appeal of Pokemon Go might elude you. Hordes of people meandering about, phones aloft, muttering “I swear there was a Pikuchu near here…” whilst trying to catch “pocket monsters” may seem silly to those of us accustomed to more passive forms of entertainment. Now, I’m not going to argue that you should download the app and start hurling red and white balls at imaginary creatures’ noggins. (Though, admittedly, it is oddly kinda fun.) What is worth doing is considering the popularity of the Pokemon Go phenomena and what it means for the future of gaming.

I’ve seen some bad Star Wars movies and, well, The Force Awakens sure ain’t one of them. Yes, the plot is full of wild coincidences, implausible developments, and groan-inducing character moments. Worst of all, the events and even specific locations sometimes follow well-worn aspects of the classic canon a bit too closely. But these sins perhaps we can and should forgive. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams is a professed Star Wars fanatic, and his love and respect for the material have clearly guided this first new film since creator George Lucas divested himself of the fabled fantasy franchise.
