I COULDN'T AGREE MORE! Many people seem all-too-quick, when a teenager who plays violent video games and listens to "questionable" music commits a violent crime, to blame those influences for his actions. HOW RIDICULOUSLY SMALL MINDED AND IGNORANT! If I'm not mistaken, the BTK serial killer was a Boy Scout leader and involved with a church. Yet I don't recall anyone blaming the Boy Scouts or the church for what he did. Besides, I've been playing violent, bloody first-person-shooter video games for at least 15 years and I've never felt the need to perch atop a tower with a sniper rifle. Why not? Maybe because I had proper and adequate parental involvement and guidance in my childhood. And maybe, I'm just not genetically predetermined to do such things regardless of the games I play or music I listen to. Wondering - what kind of video games did Hitler play? Did Capone listen to Gansta Rap?
Stop Blaming Video Games
Unfortunately up to this point, there was nothing I could really do or say. I was considered a “biased” proponent for video games. After all, I was a gamer. As if the ratings driven news media and grandstanding politicians have nothing to gain pointing fingers. There is nothing I hate more than people bitching about something they know nothing about.
Thankfully, someone smarter and with more free time than I, actually did research to see if any of the claims made by these blowhards had anything resembling truth in them. SURPRISE! They pretty much don’t. Another biased gamer venting his opinion? Maybe so, but he’s an MIT professor, and he has sources. Sources like the FBI and the U.S. Surgeon General. But what do they know, and what do I. So here, check it out for yourself.
